A Countdown of the Top IT Trends Coming in 2012 – #1… Drumroll, please – Bandwidth Capping by Jay Mellon, Partner

Jay MellonYou may have already encountered this IT Trend. One example was the recent changes Verizon made to their data plans. As we move into the New Year, bandwidth capping will become more common, and it likely will affect more than your cell phone data plan.

Internet service providers are capping bandwidth too. This simply means that they are switching to a tiered pricing structure based on the amount of data that is transferred over a period of time. In other words, the more bandwidth you use, the more it’s going to cost you. These caps can negatively impact SMBs that rely heavily on Cloud Computing, online backup services, Smartphones and other Internet based services.

If you’re a small business owner you need to consider the possible increase in bandwidth usage as you evaluate moving to the Cloud. Discuss your options with your IT services provider and pricing with your ISP before you make a change that could increase your costs more than you might have expected.
